Referral Fee and Financial Interest Disclosure
Effective July 31, 2026 · Version 1.0
This document explains exactly how Jagua is paid, what that does and does not influence, and what we will not do. A dated copy is presented to you in the conversation before we make any introduction, and a copy is retained in our records.
How we are paid
Jagua's services are free to families. We are paid by care facilities.
When a family we introduce to a facility moves in, that facility pays Jagua a referral fee under a written agreement signed before any introduction.
We tell you the actual amount for the actual facility, before we introduce you. We do not publish a single site-wide figure here, because fees differ by facility and a range on this page would tell you nothing useful about the facility you are actually considering. What you get instead is the specific number, in writing, dated, for each facility, before your information goes anywhere. If we have not told you the amount, do not let us make the introduction.
Our fees are flat amounts set per facility, not a percentage of rent. We set them this way deliberately. A percentage fee would pay us more when a family chooses a more expensive facility, which is a reason to steer you toward one. A flat fee removes that incentive.
For context on the industry. Referral fees in senior care placement commonly run between half and all of one month's rent, and assisted living in California typically costs several thousand dollars per month. Referral fees of this general size are standard across the licensed industry, including at the largest national services. The difference is not that we charge less. The difference is that you are told the number, the number does not change what we show you, and facilities that pay us nothing appear alongside those that do.
What our fee does not affect
It does not affect our rankings. Whether a facility has an agreement with us, and how much it pays, are not inputs to our ranking methodology. Those fields are stored separately from the facility record used to produce rankings and are not available to the ranking system. Our full methodology is published at /ranking-methodology.
It does not affect which facilities you see. We show licensed facilities that match the care level and location you need, whether or not they have an agreement with us. Facilities that pay us nothing appear alongside facilities that do, ordered by the same criteria. Every facility listing states whether that facility has a paid agreement with Jagua.
It does not affect what our specialists are paid. No Jagua employee or contractor receives compensation that varies by which facility a family chooses. Our specialists are not on facility-specific commission.
Where we are not paid
Medi-Cal placements. Where a placement is funded by Medi-Cal, we do not accept any fee from the facility. Federal and state anti-kickback law prohibits it. We serve these families anyway.
Skilled nursing and intermediate care facilities. California requires a Department of Public Health referral agency license (REFRLAG) to accept a fee for referring a person to a skilled nursing facility, intermediate care facility, or other health facility. Jagua Place Inc. does not currently hold that license. We will provide information about these facilities, but we do not accept and will not accept any fee, commission, or other consideration for any referral to them unless and until that license is issued. We will update this page if and when that license is issued.
Veterans benefits. We do not charge any person any fee for assistance with a VA benefits claim, and we do not receive compensation from anyone for such assistance. See Veterans benefits below.
What we will not do
- We will not accept your power of attorney, act as your conservator or guardian, or hold your funds or property.
- We will not refer you to a facility that is unlicensed, or to a facility not licensed for the level of care the person needs.
- We will not accept a fee, gift, or other consideration from a facility outside our written referral agreement.
- We will not hold an ownership or financial interest in any facility we rank or refer to. If that ever changes, the interest will be disclosed prominently on the facility's listing and the facility will be excluded from rankings.
- We will not sell your information to lead brokers, data brokers, or advertising networks.
- We will not send your information to any facility you have not specifically asked us to contact.
Current financial interests
As of the effective date above, Jagua Place Inc., its officers, directors, and employees hold no ownership interest, management role, or financial interest in any residential care facility for the elderly, adult residential facility, skilled nursing facility, or home care agency listed on this Site.
If that ever changes, we will state the interest here and on the affected facility's listing, and we will exclude that facility from ranked results.
Information we give you with every referral
Before or at the time we introduce you to a facility, we provide in writing:
- That we receive a fee from that facility if a placement results, and the amount.
- The facility's current license status and license number, verified against California Department of Social Services records, with the date verified.
- A link to the facility's most recent state inspection and evaluation reports, and a summary of any citations in the prior 24 months.
- The date of Jagua's most recent visit to the facility, or a statement that we have not visited.
- A description of what we do and do not do, and a statement that you may stop using our services at any time, for any reason, at no cost.
- What information about you we will send the facility.
Verify anything we tell you
You do not have to take our word for any of this. California publishes facility licensing and inspection records directly:
- Residential care, assisted living, board and care, memory care: California Department of Social Services Community Care Licensing — ccld.dss.ca.gov
- Skilled nursing facilities: Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services Care Compare — medicare.gov/care-compare
- Complaints about a facility: CDSS Community Care Licensing complaint line, or the CDPH Licensing and Certification district office for health facilities
- Suspected elder abuse: Adult Protective Services, or 911 in an emergency
If you believe a facility is operating without a license or is unsafe, tell us at info@jagua.ai. We are required to report suspected unlicensed facilities to the State of California and we will do so.
Veterans benefits
Jagua does not prepare, present, or prosecute any claim for benefits before the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. We charge nothing for information about VA programs, and we accept nothing from any third party in connection with a veteran's benefits claim. We do not advise anyone to transfer or restructure assets to qualify for VA benefits.
Placement referral fees paid by facilities are entirely separate from VA benefits and are never charged to a veteran or a veteran's family.
For claims assistance, contact a VA-accredited representative, a Veterans Service Organization, or an accredited attorney or agent. The VA maintains a public list of accredited representatives.
