Memory care is a specialized, secured program within an RCFE-licensed facility for people with Alzheimer's disease or other dementias who need supervision and a safe environment. Staff are specifically trained in dementia care — wandering prevention, behavioral support, and structured daily routines that reduce confusion and anxiety.

Memory care in California is provided within facilities licensed as RCFEs (Residential Care Facilities for the Elderly) by CDSS — but with an additional dementia care endorsement. This endorsement requires specialized staff training, secured perimeters to prevent wandering, dementia-appropriate programming, and additional oversight. Not all RCFEs have this endorsement — Jagua checks this before recommending any facility. Memory care is distinct from a Skilled Nursing Facility (SNF): SNFs provide 24/7 medical care under CDPH license, while memory care RCFEs provide a safe, structured residential environment without round-the-clock nursing.
